The Amount of Cholesterol and the Acidity of the Cystic Bile
Im Koo-Hyeok

Abstract
The amount of cholesterol and the acidity of the cystic bile were studied, comparing with the corresponding serum total cholesterol level and liver function in 38 patients admitted in the Seoul National University Hospital.
They were 9cases of acute cholecystitis, l3cases of chronic cholecystitis, 6cases of chronic cholecystitis with stone and lOcases of cancer of the upper abdominal organs.
The cholesterol was measured by modified Carr method and the acidity by phenolphthalein titration.
The summaries are as follows.
1) In acute cholecystitis the amount of cholesterol of the cystic bile increased in mild or moderate degree, while the acidity was generally low; whereas in chronic cholecystitis cholesterol decreased in moderate or high degree, while the acidity showed moderate or high degree.
2) In chronic cholecystitis combined with gallstone cholesterol increased moderately, while the acidity was low in general.
3) In patients with upper abdominal cancers such as. stomach or liver cancer the amount of cholesteroCof the cystic bile showed constantly high degree, while the acidity, was low.
4) No significant relation was noted between the amount of cholesterol of the cystic bile and serum cholesterol level or liver function in the given cases.
